Make-up and Hunger

Are you one of those people who think the big problems in the world are impossible to solve. Problems like hunger for example. Well take a look at this:

Annually $18 billion is spent on Makeup, $12 billion is needed to have reproductive health care for all women!!!

$17 billion is spent on pet food in Europe and the US, $19 billion is needed for the elimination of hunger and malnutrition!!!

$15 billion is spent on perfumes, and $5 billion is needed to achieve universal literacy!!!!

$14 billion is spent on ocean cruises, only $10 needed to supply clean drinking water for all!!!

Finally $11 Billion is spent on Ice cream in Europe, only $1.3 billion is needed to immunize every child in the world!!!

I got this information from a book titled "State of the World" by the Worldwatch Institute.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS???

Isn't it sad that so much is spent on luxury items, while there are so many problems in the world.

Can you see how easily so many of these problems can be solved. All these luxury items are not vital. Theoreticaly if all women decided not to wear make up for a year they could solve the hunger and malnutrition problems.

It is important to note here also that the people using these luxury items live mostly in countries who have abused and stolen from others. America and Europe are imperialists who steal other countries natural resources, and can therefore afford these things. Therefore the problems in our part of the world are direct results of their actions. So unequal division of economic prosperity is not something natural, it is the result of imperialism!!

Hello Zainab,

Just this morning I read about the terrible famine that is under way in Niger. It seems that the UN asked for help months ago, but there was little response. Not nearly the response that would be generated with a "sale" at the local department store for eye shadow or lip gloss. So, you keep on writing and maybe you can shame people into rethinking priorities!

By the way, I'd be interested to read in your blog what you're thinking now after hearing the two guest speakers who came class last week from NARAL and Pro Life Oregon.

What do you think?

Take care,

Michael

Shlonek Zainab,

If all the women who bought makeup instead spent the money on food, the food prices would rocket. The people who make makeup would go out of work, the people they buy stuff from would have less to spend, and so on and so on......What happens if all the starving people are simply given money or food ? They multiply, and next year the problem is even greater. Harsh, but that's how it is. Look at it another way....what has the western economy got to do with governments whose people starve ? Apart from the cash-crop issue, whose place is it to feed these people but themselves, ie their own governments ?

Typically dishonest and corrosive bullshit. We've heard this already from Osama Bin Laden, Richard Reid, and your dad's buddy Ayatollah Khomeini.

What all this stuff about the West's success dependent upon theft is an attempt to delegitimize and feed your own resentments. At some future date itll also justify you Isalmsits 'returning' the stolen money by force. After all if something's already stolen then your justified in 'returning it to its rightful owners'.

In reality, the West's success is down to a sceptical mindset, something you don't allow. Its this that has allowed science and rationalism to grow and develop.

Worst of all your paying implicit tribute to this ethos by studying in an American university.

confused and pathetic.

Hello Two seas liberal

Yes alot has been stolen. I dont know if Ayatolla Khomeini is "my dads buddy" but I will tell you that he is a great man, who was the reason the revolution was a success. I admire him. But I'm sure many AMericans would rather have the Mossadiq solution of just bringing the dictator - the Shah - back.

It is interesting that you should mention Khomeini, because Khomeini did not ask for all the stolen oil and everything else back, no he just nationalized the Iranian oil. Something which Blewyn is probably saying developing countries should do.

It is not surprising that the people who steal are the same people who dont think there is any stealing going on. But go read your books. Dont read anything by Osama, Khomeini or my dad. Nop, go read books by AMerican authors. Or are you going to point your finger at them for being Islamists as well.

As for science and rationalism, well I dont know where that came from. Unless you are saying that controlling other countries with puppet governments and that way stealing most of their goods is simply science. Well sorry but I dont think anyone would buy that.

In conclusion I will tell you that we are not saying all this because we want to take everything back by force, so dont fear. We, like anybody else want the citizens of our countries to have the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. That is not too much to ask.

Khomeini a great man? He was one of the most evil men of the twentieth century.

Specialities: mass murder of hundreds of thousands, hanging children and legalizing bestiality (under Khomeini sex with lionesses was made legal but male lions it was still banned. Ha ha).

A dirty psychotic old man who was about as wholesome as seedy guys who make their living out of selling doggie porn.

I will not answer your comment simply because what you are saying is rude and has no grounds. To show strength in an argument you should be respectful and share credible information. I bet even if Khomeini was a bad person, with an argument like that you would convince people of the opposite.

However, you did inspire me to write a post obout Khomeini and his life and what he did for his people. I will research this in the next couple of days and write about it.

My advice to you is to research this topic as well, so that when you aswer my post you will have more chance of convincing people of your views.

No it won’t and the post your writing on Khomeini will show you exactly what I mean. I can guarantee youre going to qualify your description of him as a ‘great man’ after youve addressed the points I’ve raised about his role as a mass murderer and child executioner.

Sorry to be brutal but it is only by confronting you with the man’s evil that will shame you (at least temporarily) into distancing yourself from a mass murderer.

Dont you feel you are disowning everything your father stands for with your admiration for Khomeini? Wouldnt he be ashamed of you?

Khomeini, the man who inspired the masses to overthrow a corrupt western-supported dictator, still lives on in spirit in Iran today- whether you like it or not two-seals-bigot, that is a fact. Iran is slowely sorting out and building its own democracy and improving its human rights record. Its not perfect, but it is doing it through its own social dynamics without unwanted western intervention in domestic politics that has only screwed up the rest of the ME in the past.

Two seas liberal and Jimmy, you both make me laugh.

Why is Bush so popular in Iran??? Are you kidding!

And Two seas liberal, don’t worry you aren’t being brutal at all. A few rude comments from you don’t affect me or the image of Khomeini one bit.

Bahrania, you totally nailed it. Isn’t it funny how American propaganda can turn freedom fighters into terrorists. They don’t have much to say about the Shah, but oh there are lists of terrible things Khomeini did. Nobody talks about Israel, But Hizbollah….. they are stamped as terrorists. But you know what, Khomeini is a hero to his people and that is what matters.
